The Mast is the highest citadel on Novica, built upon the Jonic Plane. There are 3 other smaller citadels that reached their tip before "reaching the firmament' [WBE] due to difficulty with planning. The Mast itself too never reached the firmament, but it would be far too expensive to try again. The Mast's construction actually flattened out most of the plane (due to resources being scourged from across it) and most wildlife has been driven out or left do die. Because of the easy terrain and lack of wildlife, trade routes are very easy to organize, so the Mast has become an economic and technological hub for much of Novica. It has also literally become a desert due to all of the flat terrain collecting sand from the nearby

The "cloth" in the mast itself which hangs from the spire takes advantage of high winds in the area provided by the mountain for energy. It's actually made up of lots of wires, and strands made of the vestiges of a plant called verbane, which used to be much more populous in the plane. It is very reactive to touch, so when lots of them are put together, you can build up enough electric pulses to power the whole citadel.

The Jonic Plane is historically the origin of augments [WBE], so there are many very specific augments native to the Mast. There are several castes of Mastic society with different roles and "levels" based off of what augments they are given. There are different nurseries specifically made for each caste.

By the way, the "firmament" thing is very religious. The Mast is very religious, and their brand of religion is WBE.
