When it came to selecting real-world animals to base my Water element enemies off of, I had to think outside the box a bit more than I’m used to. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this before, but I’m planning on having district regions in this fantasy world of mine that revolve around one of the ten elements, and it’s in these areas where both the dragons and enemy creatures for each element come from. My idea for the Water region is for it be a series of islands in a vast ocean, with plenty to explore both above and below the waves. Because of this, despite the most obvious animals that have ties to the element are the fully aquatic ones, I didn’t want to exclusively use them as it would leave the land portions of this area feeling lifeless by comparison. Since all of my Water dragons can function just as well in water as they can on land, to account for this problem I’m basing most of my Water enemies off of semi-aquatic creatures to give them the same capability. And when thinking of animals that would work best for this, my first thought was the Giant River Otter. So after giving it an appropriate color scheme and some extra aquatic features, I think this will serve as a fitting opponent both in an out of the water for my players, especially if they’re in a pack. Now with all of that said and done, I hope you all enjoy this little guy and I’ll see you tomorrow for the next addition to the bestiary!
