HW-ish Story

In the distance sat a large oak tree, untouched by the outside world, everything else was covered in a mist. With towards the tree the only place seemingly to go, I started to walk. The time was fast, before I knew it I had stood under its ancient limbs, but there was something else, no, someone else. The man sat there motionless, eyes staring emptily into the nothing around us. I had thought to reach out, to see if he would respond. In another second his head had whipped towards me, now clearly visible to me were his clothing, face... and neck. On his neck was a red scar, looking as if newly formed, the clothes he wore were that of a foot soldier, his face was young yet old at the same time. Why was he here? I had thought, Why am I here? In a daze a voice crackled through, "You look confused, you're not aware of what happened, right? They all are." I looked down to the man sitting to the right of me, his head now faced back towards the light gray. Before I could say anything he continued to speak, "Well, you're going to be here a while so why not introduce yourself?" he had already moved on from the topic he brought up before. I stumbled with my words, a jumbled mess spewed out, it took me a while but I eventually figured out my name, "I- uh, Del, Bryce Del." I had stuck out my hand for a handshake but he didn't bother to see it hanging there awkwardly. "Good, good," he had mumbled. "What?" "It's nothin' nothin'... any family to go home to?" Why was this man I had never met before questioning me on a personal level? "Uhm... sir? I don't think that's important right now, so uh, who are you and well... which way is out?" The man had chuckled, his head almost seemed to wobble unnaturally but I figured it was just in my head. "Who I am? That's nothing important anymore, and I can promise one thing, the only thing you need to worry about right now is what you love or miss, don't be bothered on a way out, you won't find one. You can try but you'll just end up back in this clearing." His abrupt answer answering things I had not asked of him made me feel off. What exactly was he talking about? I turned my head, the mist seemed to have closed in in what I believed to be just a few minutes of talking with the strange man. Before I knew I was panic stricken, I turned my back to the tree and tried to high-tail it out of there but the man was right, I ran fast, I ran far, but I ended up back to where I first opened my eyes. By the time I had given up the man stood up and was stretching. "Find anything?" his voice was monotone. I had expected a sarcastic response, but he didn't fulfill that expectation. I only sat in silence, unsure what to do now. The man had finished stretching and once more plotted onto the ground. He sighed, "Would it really make you feel the slightest bit better if you knew my name?" I looked back over at him, sliding down against the tree to sit, "Maybe..." “Out of every other person I’ve met, you’ve got to be one of the only one’s so stubborn to learn my name, I guess I should be grateful that it isn’t screeching at me for an exit or wallowing in self misery, “ he stood up again, dusting off his dark brown pants, “All I can remember of my name anymore is Marcove, so that’s all I can do for you. Now I’d appreciate it if you could at least attempt to answer my questions.”
