I would like to add on to murphic's post, math is a little hard... Im going to rant now
HOW THE ACTUAL FRICK ARE YOU GOING TO TELL ME THAT A SLIGHTLY MOVED LINE CANT BE 90 DEGREES?!?!?!?!??! ITS MOVED BY LESS THAN A FRACTION OF A MILLIMETER IM GOING TO EXPLODE
recently I got an f on a two question math problem because I said a 91 degree angled triangle wasn't a "right" angle, they said it was "obtuse"
...
DUDE THIS ISNT EVEN 12th GRADE YET?!?!??!?! HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THAT TO THE WHOOOOOLE CLASS AND BE LIKE "rookie mistake... should have seen that kiddos..." meanwhile the class pet is all like "eheheh such an easy question, silly IDIOTS :3333"
The teacher's pet is even worse and even more annoying, that kid would not be fairing well with my anger issues because wth. That's awful to say.
Back to the teacher, I also think that if you're teaching and most of the class gets it wrong that's something you should address, just NOT IN A SHAMING WAY. It's concerning if majority of the class fails, and that reflects back on the teacher. Plus if state/whatever testing is failed because that teacher didn't teach them well enough, there's less school funding, again reflects on the teacher, and the state/gov/whatever will get involved and push the school into more corrective programs. So all in all, not good.
Exactly! Yeah.. I'd imagine they are very tired to even bother, and very broken system that can't really be fixed because those who struggled with it gave up...
Still, the sort of almost shaming the class with the "rookie mistake should've seen that" is not correct at all, and can be damaging. Because if I was in that class and made that mistake I would hate myself already, a comment like that would cause a full spiral. Yes I know I might be the extreme as I easily spiral but still, it can hurt self esteem and self image pretty bad. Even if it isn't taken that bad it'd still suck, and quite possibly ruin the day or part of.
Until he started acting like that. Plus even if you got one decimal off, it could be wrong depending on the day. One tiny mistake, oop nope that's wrong.
Also unrelated but had teachers give me bad grades on opinion based assignments because it "wasn't what they wanted".
Also had another math teacher very similar to what you described, with similar experiences, and he was targeting me at times, and didn't do the accommodations he was legally bound to do! And agh his timed tests and how if one thing was ever so slightly off he'd count it as wrong then would point the student out- yeah I have plenty of experience with this. Actually think I may add to the list of teacher/math related posts- I have a LOT.
Sometimes yes... last year especially, I had 100% till the teacher decided to be... difficult. Ended the year with a C. He uh spent no effort on explaining, did not fact check his problems, if someone said they needed help, he'd say something to the extent of "cry me a river. If you can't do it, that's a you problem". He gave 8 things every day, didn't explain well (meanwhile me and my neurospicy friends are horribly confused and annoyed and struggling), last 4 days left of school gave us 6 things, which was two assignments two quizzes and two tests. Was horribly salty every time someone said it was too much, and he said constantly "we went at your speed the entire year now it's time for my speed." The class was doing good before then too! Most understood...
I neglected to talk about the teacher beyond the lack of incentive to actually teach, but this got me thinking I shouldn't've just handwaved the fact that that they should recognize some accountability
the decent thing to do in this situation is to just elaborate (which again can just be summarized in a single short sentence), maybe even reassure the student that this mistake wasn't that bad
But I guess the teacher has just been dealing with this job for so long that they're just too tired to really attempt to teach beyond the lessons, which i'm pretty sure is extent that he's payed to teach
On another note, i imagine it's difficult to reform a system when the victims of those systems have nigh given up on making anything better
wait a sec, did it just say the angle, or did it have to be measured?
if it had to be measured, thinking about it, this mistake doesn't seem all that bad because a 1 degree difference is, to be fair, pretty small
if it didn't have to be measured, then yeah, just remember that any value above 90 is obtuse and any value below is acute, it doesn't matter how small the difference is, as i said
i don't think the way it was taught was great if the teacher wasn't able to explain that one very simple fact, though
the good thing is that at least we can theoretically confirm the source of the problem, and if that is solved, reforming things for the better should be a lot easier
